NUEVA YORK – Los conductores que envían mensajes de textos mientras conducen podrían enfrentar multas de cientos de dólares luego de que los departamentos de policía de varios condados de Nueva Jersey recibieron subvenciones por participar en el programa “UText UPay”.
La División de Seguridad del Tráfico en Carreteras ha otorgado a 211 departamentos de policía y alguaciles del Estado Jardín un total de $ 1,401, 830 en subsidios por participar en la campaña a partir del 1 de abril.
Los oficiales planean usar estrategias especiales no divulgadas para atrapar a los automovilistas que usan sus teléfonos celulares detrás del volante, una medida que resultó en más de 15,000 citaciones el año pasado.
Los conductores distraídos podrían enfrentar multas de hasta $400, según la oficina del Fiscal General.
En 2015, 3,400 muertes y el 52% de los accidentes de tránsito en las carreteras del estado fueron provocados por conductores distraídos.
"La conducción distraída es posiblemente el problema de seguridad más serio en nuestras carreteras hoy en día", dijo Gary Poedubicky, director en funciones de la División de Seguridad del Tráfico en las Carreteras de Nueva Jersey.
