Dangerously cold weekend to slam tri-state area

Our meteorologist Andrea Romero gives us the rundown of the upcoming arctic invasion.

NEW YORK - It's here! The coldest air mass of the season has arrived with the worst of the cold expected tomorrow afternoon into Sunday morning.

The combination of below zero temperatures and strong northwest winds gusting between 30-35 mph will give us bone chilling wind chills of between -20 to -25 degrees in the metro New York and New Jersey area, southern Connecticut, and Long Island

These areas are all under a wind chill advisory starting at 4 p.m. Saturday until 12 noon Sunday, around the time temperatures will start to rise and the winds slacken.

But if you think that's cold, in the northern and western suburbs expect wind chills of up to -30 to -35 degrees resulting in a rarely issued wind chill warning for those areas due to the life threatening cold expected.

Friday night the temperature will begin to drop as the core of the Arctic air approaches, which may bring some scattered snow showers and snow squalls that can continue into Saturday morning. This inch or so of snow on the roads would lead to slippery conditions on the roads and poor visibility due to the blowing snow.

The high for Saturday will occur during the early morning hours with the temperatures plummeting throughout the day as the winds crank up.

On Sunday, the forecasted high of 17 degrees will tie the record for the lowest daytime high temperature set back in 1979.

We could also break the record for the low temperature in the morning hours if we drop below 2 degrees - something that hasn't happened in over 100 years on Valentine's Day.

We also continue to monitor the development of another winter system that will develop along the SE coast on Sunday, which could bring a mix of snow and rain for the beginning of next week. There is some concern that we could be dealing with a snowy icy mix on Monday afternoon that can lead to dangerous driving conditions. Then expect the precipitation changing over to heavy rain by Tuesday that could result to flooded roadways.
